This beautiful antique Victorian butterfly brooch is from the Arts and Crafts period, Circa 1890.

The Arts and Crafts movement breathed new life into the design of jewellery in the late 19th century. It advocated a revival of traditional handicrafts which used romantic, folk decoration with an influx of colour to counteract the rather mechanised industrialisation of modern design.

The wonderful brooch is beautifully engraved depicting a fabulous butterfly resting on a branch of Fuchsia’s.

The butterflies wings are set with white Pearls and green Paste Stones with a violet Amethyst body making up the Suffragette colours.

Suffragettes liked to be depicted as feminine, their jewellery popularly consisted of Violet, Green and White colours which were chosen to counter the stereotypes put forward by opponents that they were mannish or shrieking! Green is for Give, white is for Women and violet is for Votes!

The brooch is all set in Silver with some of the leaves gilded in Gold.

A lovely, collectable piece that is simply beautiful!

Weighs 9.2 grams.

Measures 23mm across x 57mm down.

Amethyst measures 5mm x 7mm.
